Feniculul este o leguma versatila, care joaca un rol important in cultura alimentara la mai multe natiuni europene, in special in Franta si Italia.

Numele stiintific al feniculului este Foeniculum vulgare, apartine familiei Umbellifereae si, prin urmare, se inrudeste cu patrunjelul, morcovul, mararul si coriandru. Feniculul este compus dintr-un bulb verde, alb sau galben pal din care sunt aranjate tulpini strans suprapuse. Tulpinile sunt acoperite cu frunze verzi langa care cresc florile si produc seminte de fenicul. Bulbul, tulpina, frunzele si semintele sunt comestibile.
