Warsaw-born, self-taught photographer Pawel Jaszczuk has lived in Tokyo for seven years where he has been photographing “salarymen” — sharply dressed, disheveled and asleep on the sidewalks. Frozen mid-gaits and contorted slumps, their sleep poses remind us of fashion magazine spreads and Robert Longo’s Men in Cities. Appropriately titled, High Fashion is a series in progress. The approximate number of orphans world wide is estimated at around 160 million. This staggering number is an estimate based upon known orphans and calculations from organizations with feet on the ground. The value of any estimation of the number of orphans is only as good as the reporting agency and the accepted definition of an orphan. The 160 million includes children with one parent…but in some of the countries that still does not mean they are being cared for.

Thousands are Orphaned Each Day Some estimates put this number at 42,000 per day. According to UNICEF statistics, the rate of new orphan children in Asia and some other regions is falling, while in Sub Saharan Africa it is increasing primarily due to AIDS. If the above figure is accurate, 1750 children are orphaned every day, 29 per minute and nearly 1 every 2 seconds. Innocent Children Become Orphans by No Fault of Their Own First we can address the obvious...things that we read and hear about in the news all the time: War, disease, poverty, natural disasters, abandonment, and accidents are among some of the leading causes.
